Would you like to

contribute to our Soldier

& Family Support efforts?

Every year, this chapter (a 501c3 non-profit activity) spends hundreds of thousands of dollars supporting Soldiers and their Families. Fund-raising by local volunteers provides much of the money used for these activities, but your tax deductible donation would surely help extend the reach of our work. Will you donate $20?

Every penny will go to support Fort Hood Soldiers and their Families.

Senator John Cornyn Updates –
and Thanks – Our Chapter

Chapter President Billy Mills thanks US Senator John Cornyn for joining our chapter at its second General Membership Meeting of Program Year 2011-2012. See more from our meeting.
Thursday, January 19, 2012 — Central Texans packed the Killeen Civic and Conference Center last night as US Senator John Cornyn congratulated our chapter for its support of Soldiers and their Families. The senator, the son of a career US Air Force family, currently serves on the US Senate’s Finance, Judiciary, Armed Services, and Budget Committees will, with the pending retirement of Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, soon become the senior US Senator in Washington from the Lone Star State.

At a time when the nation is wrestling with dramatic changes in its defense strategy and with severe stresses on our federal budget, Senator Cornyn’s visit was important – and his message welcomed news.

"Even as rumors circulate about potential reductions in the number of Army brigade combat teams, I continue to believe that 50,000 soldiers is an appropriate number for Fort Hood. That number will allow the post to leverage its full potential and the billions of taxpayer dollars that have been invested in it."

The senator reminded his audience that no installation in the nation has, over these past ten years of combat, suffered more battlefield losses. And yet, our Soldiers, their Families and the communities that surround Fort Hood remain steadfast. "For some (Americans), the ongoing war in Afghanistanis something they read about in the newspaper or hear about on TV. For families in Fort Hood and the surrounding communities ... it's something far different."

"America has a duty to keep faith with our soldiers, both during their military service and afterward," he said. "Regardless of what changes might be made in the military pension system for soldiers who enlist in the future, I believe that everyone who is currently serving or who has already served ... should be grandfathered into the current system and should be unaffected."

As a footnote, John Sharp, Chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, was also with us, here to be with Soldiers last evening and to participate today in the Inauguration of Dr. Marc A. Nigliazzo as the first President of Texas A&M University – Central Texas.

It was – and is – a great time to be at, near and surrounded by Fort Hood as “The Great Place.”

Your Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter, Association of the U.S. Army will once again in 2012 provide $1,000 higher education and vocational training scholarships to deserving active-duty or retired soldiers or members of their immediate families. In 2011, we presented $72,000 in scholarship awards; we expect to do at least as well in 2012.

Scholarships will be available, on a competitive basis, to those enrolling in traditional college or university courses of study at both the lower- and upper-degree levels, and to those pursuing a vocational training program that leads to certification in a particular trade, skill or craft.

Winners will be selected by our chapter's scholarship committee with evaluations based on each individual’s complete application packet which must include: official school transcripts reflecting courses taken and grades earned; evidence of demonstrated leadership in extracurricular and community activities; up to five letters of recommendation; and an essay of not more than 500 words that answers the question:

What characteristics do you look for in a candidate
for "Commander in Chief"?

Identify 3 strong characteristics and defend your choices.

Scholarship applications and all supporting documentation must be received at our chapter's post office box by noon March 15, 2012. Prior scholarship recipients are reminded that there is a limit of two annual awards per individual recipient.

Awardees will be notified not later than April 12, 2012 and scholarships presented at the chapter's annual Scholarship Dinner, to be held on April 19 at Fort Hood’s Club Hood.

Applications will be available in student counseling offices of local high schools by January 10, 2012 For further information, contact Ms. Susan Jones, Scholarship Coordinator, Central Texas – Fort Hood Chapter, AUSA at 254-290-0383, or by mail to smjones@extracobanks.com

Automax donates van to

Fort Hood Warrior Transition Brigade

The Association of the United States Army, with the help of Automax, donated a 15-passenger Ford van to the Warrior Transition Brigade on October 6th during a ceremony outside Fort Hood National Bank.

The van will allow the brigade to expand its internship program, Operation Warfighter, which puts the brigade's soldiers in six-month internships at federal agencies as they prepare to transition out of the Army, said Maj. David Shoupe, public affairs office for the brigade. (For more detail, go to our News Section)

In a ceremony held at Fort Hood, Warrior Transition Brigade (WTB)

commander, (center) COL John Kolessar, accepted the keys to the

decorated van from AUSA State President, Ron Taylor.

      Partnership roster updated
             January 20, 2012

Army Chief of Staff, General Ray Odierno, has called Fort Hood the "epicenter of sacrifice.”  And just a few days ago, US Senator John Cornyn, while visiting with our chapter, reminded us all that no installation in America has lost more of its Soldiers on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan than has Fort Hood.

Over these past ten years, Fort Hood Soldiers have either been:
1. preparing to deploy;
2. already deployed; or
3. just returned and resetting or reequipping for future missions.

In sheer numbers alone, no other installation in America has experienced such commitment.

Throughout 2009, '10 and '11, well over thirty thousand Fort Hood Soldiers were committed to combat operations in Iraq or Afghanistan. Now in these earliest days of 2012, most -but not all - are back home.

Whether deployed or not, our Soldier Families work to keep the home fires burning. And we help. We can ease their burden and support their efforts by actively participating in the Adopt A Fort Hood Unit program. We can provide truly welcomed and important support to Soldiers and their Families - if we just choose to do so. And many of you are!! But if you are not, you would be most welcome to join in!!

As you scroll through this list of Fort Hood units, you may find a unit with whom you would particularly like to partner, just enroll. We will be at the other end of that email, fax or phone call to help you make a match.

If you do not have a preference, we can identify an appropriately sized unit that needs a partner, and match them with your request.

And if the unit you want already has a partner listed; that's OK, too. Just email leadership@forthoodausa.org; tell us what unit you want and we can make it happen! Any unit would welcome more than one civic partner
